“Magnetic Hardening in Low-Dimensional Ferromagnets"

4) 16h10 – 17h00 : Drink & Sandwich

Abstract:
How “hard” (coercive) a ferromagnet can be, has been a puzzle for a century. Seven decades ago, William Fuller Brown offered his famous theorem to correlate coercivity with the magnetocrystalline anisotropy fields in ferromagnetic materials. However, the experimental coercivity values have been far below the calculated levels given by the theorem, which is called Brown’s Coercivity Paradox. Researchers have attempted to solve the paradox with sustained efforts
however, the paradox remains unsolved, and coercivity still cannot be predicted and calculated quantitatively by modeling. Progress has been made in the past 20 years in understanding coercivity mechanisms in nanoscale low-dimensional ferromagnets. In fact, ferromagnetism is a size-dependent physical phenomenon, as revealed by theoretical studies. However, nanoscale ferromagnetic samples with controllable size and shape have been available only in recent times. By adopting newly developed salt-matrix annealing, surfactant-assisted milling, and improved hydrothermal and chemical solution techniques, we used a bottom-up approach to produce nanostructured magnets and have successfully synthesized monodisperse ferromagnetic Fe-Pt, Fe-Co and Sm-Co nanoparticles and Co nanowires with extraordinary properties, which are strongly size- and shape-dependent. A study on size-dependent Curie temperature of the L10 ferromagnetic nanoparticles with sizes down to 2 nm has experimentally proved a finite-size effect. A systematic study of nanowires with extremely high coercivity above their magnetocrystalline anisotropy fields has opened a door to the solution of Brown’s Paradox.

Short Biography:
J. Ping Liu received his Ph.D. degree in physics from the Univ. of Amsterdam, in 1994. For the past four decades, he has worked in research and development of permanent magnets and related magnetic materials in China, Europe, and USA. He is currently a Distinguished University Professor with The University of Texas at Arlington, USA, and a fellow oft he IEEE. His current research has been focused on hard magnetic nanoparticles, thin films, and bulk nanocomposites, as reported in his more than 320 peer-reviewed journal articles, review articles, and books, including Nanoscale Magnetic Materials and Applications (Springer, 2009), Skyrmions: Topological Structures, Properties, and Applications (CRC Press, 2016), and Permanent Magnets: The History and Future (Science Press, 2020). He has supervised more than 50 graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. Dr. Liu is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society. He received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 25th International Workshop on Rare-Earth and Future Permanent Magnets and Their Applications in 2018.

zuletzt u.a. „Lustmarsch durchs Theoriegelände“ (2006, in elf Museen). Er repräsentiert das „Institut für theoretische Kunst, Universalpoesie und Prognostik“, und ist Gründer der Denkerei / Amt für Arbeit an unlösbaren Problemen und Maßnahmen der hohen Hand mit Sitz in Berlin (www.denkerei-berlin.de).

Remark: Abstract: Mathematics in climate research is often thought to be mainly a provider of techniques for solving, e.g., the atmosphere and ocean flow equations. Three examples elucidate that its role is much broader and deeper:
1) Climate modelers often employ reduced forms of “the flow equations” for efficiency. Mathematical analysis helps assessing the regimes of validity of such models and defining conditions under which they can be solved robustly.
2) Climate is defined as “weather statistics”, and climate research investigates its change in time in our “single realization of Earth” with all its complexity. The required reliable notions of time dependent statistics for sparse data in high dimensions, however, remain to be established. Recent math- ematical research offers advanced data analysis techniques that could be “game changing” in this respect.
3) Climate research, economy, and the social sciences are to generate a scientific basis for informed political decision making. Subtle misunderstandings often hamper systematic progress in this area. Mathematical for- malization can help structuring discussions and bridging language barriers in interdisciplinary research.

"Stochastic lattice systems for climate models"

Abstract:Tropical weather and climate variability consists of numerous circulation and cloud systems that occur on a hierarchy of temporal and spatial scales ranging from the scale of the convective cloud of 1km to 10 km to planetary intraseasonal disturbances such as the Madden Julian oscillation (MJO) and monsoon dynamics. These systems interact nontrivially with each other and with the global dynamics. Unfortunately, despite most recent improvements, state-of-the-art climate models represent very poorly these systems and their mutual interactions and their interactions with global dynamics as well as the rainfall distributions in the tropics. The representation of clouds and rainfall variability in the tropics is still one of the major uncertainties in the climate models used for the IPCC climate projections. The culprit is believed to be the poor representation of clouds and organized convection by the underlying subgrid models used to represent convection and clouds, which are deterministic in nature, are based on the quasi-equilibrium theory, and as such fail to represent the often chaotic variability due to the interactions of various cloud types with each other and with the environment. Instead, we use a stochastic lattice interacting particle system to represents these clouds and associated interactions using observations as a guiding principle. This leads to a better representation of the afore mentioned tropical modes of variability including the MJO and monsoon dynamics.

"Asymptotic analysis: What is it and what is it good for?"

Abstract: famous mathematicians, some of them practitioners themselves, have associated "asymptotics" with the "dark arts", "inventions of the devil", "a toolbox of tricks for special cases", and the like. In 40 years of experience with it I have come to a broader perspective, and that is the topic of this lecture. Most and foremost, I view Mathematics as the "science of structure", and I will argue why this leads me to consider asymptotics to be quite a systematic mathematical endeavour. I will highlight that asymptotics is found all over the place, from the applied mathematics of practical engineering to the award-winning work of a recent Fields medalist, and that the common denominator is the search for structure and understanding. Seen this way, the multi-faceted nature of asymptotics comes out as a necessity rather than as a reason for mockery. An asymptotic theory of tropical storms that is under development in my group will provide examples to go with my elaborations.

B) 11h20 – 12h10 : Edriss TITI (U.Cambridge, Texas A&M, Weizmann)
“Mathematical Analysis of Geophysical Models”

Abstract: We present recent results concerning the global regularity of certain geophysical models. In particular, the three-dimensional Planetary Geostrophic and the Primitive Equations (PE) of oceanic and atmospheric dynamics with various anisotropic viscosity and turbulence mixing diffusion. However, in the non-viscous (inviscid) case it can be shown that, with or without rotation, the PE are linearly and nonlinearly ill-posed in the context of Sobolev spaces, and that there is a one-parameter family of initial data for which the corresponding smooth solutions of the primitive equations develop finite-time singularities (blowup). However, the PE will be shown to be well-posed in the space of real analytic functions, and we will discuss the effect of rotation on prolonging the life-span of analytic solutions. Capitalizing on the above results, we provide rigorous justification of the derivation of the viscous PE of planetary scale oceanic dynamics from the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, for vanishing small values of the aspect ratio of the depth to horizontal width. Specifically, we can show that the Navier-Stokes equations, scaled appropriately by the small aspect ratio parameter of the physical domain, converge strongly to the primitive equations, globally and uniformly in time, and that the convergence rate is of the same order as the aspect ratio parameter.

Remark: The video was a spontaneous idea the day before, it was completely improvised,
the blackboard lecture was given with 15 minutes of preparation,
mathematics friends all over the world were asked on the very PI day if they could send a 2 min video, as it comes spontenously to their mind.

An interesting "synchronicity" (entanglement ?!) happened between Shi Jin in Shanghai and me in Vienna: completely independently we chose the topics "how to estimate the value of PI by polygons" and "how to Quantify Uncertainty".

In the end, these videos combine to "A beautiful message":
our global community will survive the corona crisis,
we scientists can help to overcome and prevent such crisis !

We mathematicians should combine the skills and results of "Pure math" and "Applied math" for the best of "Mathematics in the Applications" !

I am looking forward to the sunny day when we will meet all together again to have a "Pauli symposium" on "Mathematics has no borders", where we share "A delicious PIe".

For the weeks, months, years to come I wish us courage and patience,
may the world that arises from the corona crisis be a better one for fighting the climate catastrophy.

PS: the choice of mathematicians who present a short video was more or less random among my personal global friends who had a few hours to answer to my request, also related to the time shift between Asia, Europe and North America - the 3 continents where I have been working.
I chose Alfio as first, he is locked in the European epicenter of corona, and Claude as last, as the "doyen" of a large community celebrating his 80th birthday on 4.April.

Note that China, "by coincidence", has 2 of the 7 speakers, with the only "youngster" among them.

Pauli Symposium on "How many mathematics ?!"

Location: WPI c/o Fak Mathematik, OMP1, 1090 Wien, Sky Lounge (12th floor)
Time: 14. Sep 2018 (Fri) - 15. Sep 2018 (Sat); Opening: 15:00
Topics:
Why is “mathematics”, “les mathematiques” in plural e.g. in English, French,
and “Mathematik” in singular e.g. in German !?
Are there different science cultures/politics expressed in the language ?

Why are there 2 sections of mathematics in the French (CNU) system ?! :
Sec. 25 : “mathematiques” ,
Sec. 26 : “mathematiques appliquées et applications des mathematiques”.

What are "beautiful mathematics" - what are "useful mathematics" ?
Is there a relation between them ?

How many mathematics ?!

What about the answer : "2 : correct and false!" ?
Is/are mathematics more than theorems and proving if they are correct or false ?

Are "theorem-free" mathematical modeling & numerical simulation two of the most important mathematics ?

What about "physics" (plural) vs "la physique / die Physik" (singular) ?!
Biology, Chemistry only singular in all languages !?
Are "informatics" ("computer science") and "statistics" part of "mathematics" ?

Participants will be from mathematics, physics, "computer science"
and various applied fields like micromagnetism, engineering, biology, medicine,...

Programme : short statements of each participant, some "presentations"
and a general discussion, maybe we agree (to disagree) on an answer.

Location: WPI Seminar Room C 714
Time: 19. Jun 2013 (Wed) - 20. Jun 2013 (Thu); Opening: 10:00
Topics:
The objective of these lessons is to show that model risk, particularly financial model risk, is intrinsic to stochastic modelling, and that its analysis opens new challenging mathematical and numerical questions.
We will also present recent results which concern strategies which, issued from the technical analysis, do not rely on a specific mathematical model and therefore are robust w.r.t model risk.
Various theories will be used, such as statistics of random processes, stochastic control, Malliavin calculus, backward stochastic differential equations, viscosity solutions of nonlinear Partial Differential equations.
However the course will be self-contained

The Semantic Web aims at enriching the existing Web with meta-data and processing methods so as to provide web-based systems with advanced (so-called intelligent) capabilities, in particular with context-awareness and decision support. The advanced capabilities required in most Semantic Web application scenarios primarily call for reasoning. Reasoning capabilities are offered by Semantic Web languages that are currently being developed. Most of these languages, however, are developed mainly from functionality-centered perspectives (e.g. ontology reasoning or access validation) or application-centered perspectives (e.g. Web service retrieval and composition). A perspective centered on the reasoning techniques complementing the above-mentioned activities appears desirable for Semantic Web systems and applications. This Summer School series is devoted to this perspective.

Many problems in finance can be posed as non-linear Hamilton Jacobi Bellman (HJB) Partial Integro Differential Equations (PIDEs). Examples of such problems include: dynamic asset allocation for pension plans, optimal operation of natural gas storage facilities, optimal execution of trades, and pricing of variable annuity products. (e.g. Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefit). This course will discuss general numerical methods for solving the HJB PDEs which arise from these types of problems. After an introductory lecture, we will give an example where seemingly reasonable methods do not Course highlights: Day 1: (e.g. Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefit).
